Syllable is a funded startup company in Sunnyvale, California.

We develop intelligent assistance through text and voice using natural language for high-value interactions. The initial product focus is in the automotive, energy and healthcare sector. Our software assists those who seek services, such as a customer or patient, and those who provide services, such as a customer service representative or caregiver.

Our mission is to provide intelligent assistance with machine learned technology for interactions between an organization and an individual that involves multiple human participants.

Syllable currently develops technology in the following areas:
Decision tree understanding
Information extraction and semantic parsing
Language understanding and dialog building
Machine learning and theory formation
Question answering
Visual knowledge extraction and automated visual understanding
Task understanding and automation

Position Summary
Syllable currently has projects in the following areas for the UX Interface Designer position:
Case management for chronic diseases (Parkinson’s and Diabetes)
Assistance for online counseling in mental health

Automated segmentation and understanding of customer service requests
Intelligent task embedding within instant messaging

The UX Interface Designer position will focus primarily on the healthcare use cases but will also have the opportunity to contribute and engage in a variety of other areas critical to our mission.

These include opportunities to participate in our research projects working to develop the long-term design vision taking a leading role in overseeing and implementing a customer pilot through supporting design work helping to develop collaborative and strategic relationships with relevant academic and industry organizations
We encourage authoring and presentation of design papers for peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Applicants for UX Interface Designer at Syllable should have a strong interest in healthcare and one or
more of the following areas: natural language processing, human-computer interfaces, knowledge
representation and reasoning, spoken languages, psychology, and sociology.

Develop high-level and detailed storyboards, mockups, and prototypes to effectively communicate with engineers and customers through text and voice interactions and design ideas

Create detailed, comprehensive text and voice design specifications for collaboration with the engineering team and define and extend text and voice personality for new product areas.

Evaluate usability and consistency of existing dialog flows and recommend design changes
Create guidelines, reference artifacts, and resources for engineers to assist in design and implementation of text and voice interactions

Develop and evangelize user interaction design best practices and guidelines to ensure a consistent experience for users across Syllable products

Minimum qualifications:
BA/BS degree in Visual Design, Graphic Design, Human-Computer interaction, Linguistics, or a related
field, or equivalent practical experience
Experience in designing web or voice applications

Preferred qualifications:
Experience in designing and tuning directed dialog, text and voice, as well as natural language
interactions for computer applications
Experience in designing speech-enabled interaction flows across for mobile devices
Experience in persona design and designing/writing in persona
Technical knowledge of the mechanics of writing vs. speaking
Experience with qualitative usability testing and experience on a design team that ships consumer products
Ability to demonstrate technical knowledge of relevant topics in dialog design and decision management
