A significant portion of a user's digital past is recorded in textual form, for example, in email messages, SMS texts, tweets, status updates and blog posts. We view this personal text archive as a personal informatics system that forms an implicit life-log, full of deeply meaningful information for its owner. We have built a system that performs sentiment analysis on long-term personal email archives to identify the sentiments often expressed in email communication, such as love, grief and anger. This system is useful for the task of reflection and analysis using personal archives accumulated over a lifetime.
